The following factors are likely to affect the accuracy of suicide data:There may be difficulty in determining the intent behind a death and some suicide deaths are likely to be recorded as deaths of undetermined intent. This would underestimate the rate of suicide.Similarly, there may be different practices in different areas in classifying the intent behind a death and some suicide deaths may be classified as deaths of undetermined intent. Again, this would underestimate the rate of suicide. There can be substantial delays in registering suicide deaths due to the time taken to complete inquests so it is advisable to allow a number of years time lag before reporting a particular year’s suicide data. This will improve the completeness of the data.
