Physical activity and older adults: An overview of guidelines, trends, policies and frameworks
There are major individual and societal benefits to getting people more active. Being physically active is one of the most important first steps that people of all ages can take to improve their health and wellbeing.
This publication provides an overview of physical activity policies, frameworks and guidelines on the island of Ireland and aims to be a resource for researchers, practitioners and policymakers. It forms part of an ongoing programme of work by the Institute of Public Health in Ireland (IPH)on the theme of physical activity and ageing, focused on the role of healthcare professionals on the island of Ireland in supporting older adults to be more physically active.
We are ageing both as individuals and as a society. Physical activity levels typically decline with advancing age. Now more than ever it is crucial that policy and practice proactively supports older adults to improve and maintain their health and wellbeing by achieving the recommended levels of physical activity.
